A PUBLICATION OF THE PTA AND FRIENDS OF ALAMO FOUNDATION
October 2018

In this issue:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Happy Fall! This year, our October offers many opportunities for community participation. First off, please join us for our monthly PTA meeting tomorrow evening. Next Wednesday is the national Walk & Roll to School Day. Look for additional meeting places, or "bus stops" to be announced in Gator Weekly. On Saturday, October 13, our 2nd Annual Alamo Golf Tournament tees off in the Presidio, AND SFUSD's annual Enrollment Fair takes place at John O'Connell High School. If you can spare an hour or two to share what you love about Alamo with prospective families please let me or Ms. Shellie know.

Last, but not least, we celebrate Halloween early at our carnival on 10/26. We want all of our children to enjoy the festivities so I want to remind families about our costume guidelines which you can review below. I look forward to seeing everyone enjoying all the festivities!  --Principal Fong

Know Your Candidates! Attend a Board of Education Candidate Forum.

Did you know there are three open Board of Education seats on November’s ballot? There is still plenty of time to learn more about the nearly 20 candidates (including Alamo parent, Li Miao Lovett!) running to serve four-year terms beginning in 2019.

The Board of Education is responsible for establishing educational goals and standards; approving curriculum; setting the district budget, which is independent of the city's budget; confirming appointment of all personnel; and approving purchases of equipment, supplies, services, leases, renovation, construction, and union contracts. In order to manage the day-to-day administration of the district, the Board of Education appoints a superintendent of schools.

Please start sorting through your gently used toys and books to be donated for the Halloween Carnival. The children love shopping with their Halloween tickets. Please drop off goods on the auditorium stage during the last week of carnival, October 22-25. We are also looking for NEW small toys to be used as prizes for games.

Spotlight on Austin Chan and Owen Peery

Meet Austin Chan, or as the students call him Mr. Chan. This will be his second year of teaching but his first year at Alamo teaching 2nd grade. Outside of school, he spends time on the water of Lake Merced as a part of a local Dragon Boat team. He looks forward to getting to know the Alamo community!

Meet Owen Peery, or Mr. P., who teaches Computer Science. He's been teaching computer science and technology for 15 years in a variety of schools, in the US and abroad (he speaks French & Spanish too!) As an avid cyclist, he commutes every day by bicycle. He loves animals and has a Chihuahua Jack Russell terrier mix named Bonita. His two favorite things about teaching computer science are watching kids learn how to use computer science to express their creativity, and showing kids computer scientists also help treat and cure diseases like cancer by making robots that can perform brain surgeries and more! Words he lives by "Harness Collective Intelligence".

  ALAMO'S K2C WINNER!

Congratulations to Emma Hsu (Rm. 218) who's been selected as Alamo's K2C Art contest winner. She will receive $25 deposited into her SF sponsored K2C college savings account and is eligible to compete in a district wide contest. Congrats, Emma!

GATOR GEAR is a great way to support the school and show your school spirit. We have T-shirts and hoodies of all sizes for kids and adults featuring our Alamo Gators logo. Kids hoodies are pullovers; adult hoodies are zip-up. Order through [Store_Button] or stop by our table during the carnival.

Wear your Gator Gear for Spirit Day every Friday!

STOP DROP AND GO October Assignments:

Turn your shopping receipts into donations for your school. It's that simple.

Snap pictures of your receipts from any store, big or small, that primarily sell food, health or beauty items to earn Roo Points (cash donations) for your school. Whether you're shopping at a supercenter, dollar store, or local convenience store - it doesn't matter where you shop or what items you buy - Shoparoo will make a cash donation for every receipt! We earned just under $165 last year! Let's beat that number this year!

Thank you to Salesforce and Hands on Bay Area for beautifying our schoolyard and garden!
