"Wear Blue for Kindness" on March 14th.

Please join Peter Kirk staff, students and PTSA in highlighting and celebrating kindness the week of March 12th through 16th. As part of the week's events, March 14th is designated "Wear Blue for Kindness" day. Peter Kirk is joining many schools across the District in wearing blue, as a symbol of peace.

The PTSA Board, in partnership with the school staff, discussed how to recognize March 14th in an age-appropriate way that would support children through their life-long journey of navigating their emotions and relationships, and in solidarity with bully prevention. We are encouraging members of our community to wear blue, perform random acts of kindness, look out for those who are lonely, and reach out to make new friends.

Standing together in support of safety for our children on March 14th.

As you may be aware, there is a larger day of action planned for middle school and high school students to walk out for 17 minutes in remembrance of the 17 students who lost their lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Although our staff and students do not plan to participate in this, we wanted to provide another peaceful way parents and the community could come together, if desired, to show our solidarity in our desire to keep our kids safe.

In addition to wearing blue, we want to invite any interested parents (and members of the community) to stand together in a line, in front of school, along 6th Street at 10am for 17 minutes. We hope to create a visual of a human ‘shield’ to highlight our desire to keep our kids safe. Please arrive by 9:45am and afterwards feel free to join us as we process to City Hall, joined by others from several other Kirkland schools.

Save the Date: Next Moms' Night Out coming 4/21.

Our next Moms' Night Out is coming on Saturday, April 21st. The event's team is busy planning the activity and will share more details in the coming weeks.

Levies passed. Bond failed to meet the threshold.

Thank you to everyone who stood up for our kids and provided support throughout the election. The two levies passed at over 50%. This is a huge win given the questions around funding and taxes at the state level. Unfortunately, the bond failed to meet the 60% threshold needed to pass. With the outcome of the election and overcrowding in our schools, LWSD will share details with us soon about next steps.

We would like to extend a very sincere thank you to Melissa Stone, VP of Advocacy for Peter Kirk PTSA and the Lake Washington PTSA Council. Melissa worked tirelessly over the last several months in the lead up to the February 13th election to increase awareness and build support for these important measures. From sign-waving and social media campaigns, to meetings with the Superintendent and organizing candidate forums, Melissa's hard work and dedication to making LWSD the best place to learn is unwavering. Thank you Melissa Stone for advocating for our students, you are our March Peter Kirk PTSA Volunteer of the Month!

The Science of Snuggles

As mentioned above, next week is Kindness Week at Peter Kirk Elementary. We will be celebrating and practicing kindness throughout the week. Following is an article that was in the May 2014 Scholastic Parent and Child Magazine. I saw it as a great way to start practicing kindness at home so that our students can bring bunches of kindness to school next week and every day. Enjoy reading the article and then go out and hug your kid(s)!!

Peter Kirk PTSA receives LW PTSA Council's "You Rock!" Award.

Peter Kirk PTSA's fabulous Co-Directors of communications, Tricia Barendt and April Rickard, and PTSA President, Maureen Crabtree, accepted a 'You Rock!' Award from the LW PTSA Council for the implementation of our new PTSA management tool, MySchoolAnywhere. This contact management solution has been a game-changer in allowing us to become more efficient and centralizing management of our PTSA community. We hope it has been as beneficial for you when it comes to accessing the online directory from the App on your phone, viewing volunteer sign-ups in one central place, and making purchases in the store. Congratulations to this rock star team!

Thank you, Kindergarten and 5th grade families.

Luckily there were plenty of leftovers to allow our staff and teachers to grab a small sweet throughout the rest of this week. Thank you!
